The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) 41st National Conference was
held March 25-28, 2004 in Newport, Rhode Island at Hyatt Regency Goat
Island. The conference theme was Photography and Place: Home-Neighborhood-Nation-World.
The Common Places: Photographs by Karen Bucher, Judy Gelles,
David Husom exhibit was concurrent with the SPE conference
and part of the gallery tour during the conference.
The 2004 conference examined what "Place" means
in its broadest sense. The Keynote Address was by photographer
Frank Gohlke Thursday night in a beautiful historic "art
church." Mark Sealy, Director of Britain’s Autograph:
The Association of Black Photographers,spoke Friday evening
as Featured Speaker, followed by Honored Educator Jerome Liebling.
Jerry was introduced by his renowned student, filmmaker Ken
Burns.
